/🎓 Monika al Shurbaghi in conversation with Alifa Rifaat (1930-1996). Egyptian writer Alifa Rifaat was one of the most important Arab writers of the 20th century. In her short stories, she unabashedly depicts female sexuality, relationships and loss in rural Egyptian culture. Her stories did not attempt to undermine the patriarchal system, but served to portray the problems of a patriarchal society in which men do not adhere to Koranic precepts. In particular, her descriptions of female circumcision, which she always opposed and which is still common practice in Egypt and Sudan today, attracted a great deal of attention. The conversation is a rare interview recording with Alifaa Rifaat in Cairo in 1992.
