/🎓 Christoph Burgmer in conversation with Baber Johansen. Baber Johansen, born in 1936, is one of the most renowned German scholars of Islam and an internationally recognised expert on Islamic law. He taught in Berlin, was Director of the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris and Professor of Islamic Religious Studies at Harvard in the USA. Knowledge of the ‘figh’, of Islamic religious norms, of Islamic jurisprudence, is a prerequisite for understanding current developments in civil law (including inheritance law, family law, criminal law, but also human rights) in modern Islamic states such as Morocco or Egypt. In this discussion, the basics, conditions and effects of so-called religious law (sharia), also as the ideological basis of Islamic fundamentalism for the establishment of an ‘Islamic state’, are presented in an easily understandable way.
