/🎓 During World War I, when workers from Middle Egypt and Nubia came to Cairo to produce war materials for the British, they took up residence in the medieval tombs of the City of the Dead on the outskirts of Cairo’s Old City as free housing. It was the first so-called informal neighborhood in the Egyptian capital. Since then, numerous others have sprung up in the metropolis of 20 million people. Informal neighborhoods are not necessarily shantytowns or slums. Formally speaking, they are first and foremost neighborhoods where ownership status is unclear. Christoph Burgmer’s report takes listeners into the complex reality of life in the informal neighborhood in Egyptian capital on the Nile.

/🎓 Constantin von Barloewen in conversation with Stefan Fuchs. The Argentine anthropologist and cultural studies scholar, who grew up in Germany, analyses the dangers of globalised, digital capitalism in the wake of the attacks of 11 September 2001 on the Twin Towers in New York. Fascist conformity is taking hold amidst the loss of global cultural diversity, driven by the total commodification of all areas of life and experience. The destruction of humanity does not come with the loud bang of an atomic bomb, but creeps in on tiptoe as the gradual dispossession of all individuality. It is the global transition from the Age of Enlightenment to the Age of Consumption.

/🎓 Abdelmajid Benjelloun in conversation with Christoph Burgmer. Abdelmajid Benjelloun is a Moroccan writer, poet and historian who writes in French and specialises in the history of northern Morocco. In this conversation, Abdelmajid Benjelloun analyses the role of the Moros within contemporary Moroccan history. The question of the Moros’ responsibility in the Spanish Civil War remains controversial to this day. This is particularly so as Spanish historical scholarship has paid scant attention to the Moros’ motives and circumstances, and the eyewitnesses have long since passed away. Thus, 90 years after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, and in light of the events in Ceuta in 2026, it becomes abundantly clear how a Eurocentric interpretation of history unites even ideologically diverse parties under the banner of nationalist populism.

/🎓 Paul Parin (1916–2009) in conversation with Karin Beindorff. The Swiss psychologist, ethnologist and writer is considered one of the key co-founders of ethnopsychoanalysis. The Swiss psychologist, ethnologist and writer is regarded as one of the key co-founders of ethnopsychoanalysis. In addition, Paul Parin, together with Alexander and Margarete Mitscherlich, the members of the Frankfurt School and Peter Brückner, was one of Germany’s most significant social psychologists. Social psychology is of great importance, particularly in a globalised consumer society characterised by global migration. In the 21st century, psychotherapeutic treatment of migrants is hardly possible without taking social-psychological contexts into account.

/🎓 On the outskirts of Ahmedabad, not far from the Sabarmati Ashram founded by ‘Babu’ Mahatma Gandhi – the starting point of the famous Salt March – lies the village of Chharanagar. This is home to the Chharas, a community that was once nomadic. In the predominantly Muslim Indian state of Gujarat, alcohol is banned. The Chharas, who were forcibly settled by the British and classified as genetically criminal (criminal tribes act 1871) on racist grounds, were only able to survive by illegally distilling and selling alcohol. To this day, every other house has a homemade still in its back garden. To break out of this vicious circle of criminalisation, the Budhan Street Theatre was founded. We visited Chharanagar and the Budhan Theatre.
