They spoke to miners, producers, diamond dealers and consumers. This is because, just like gold, diamonds are still regarded as a safe investment in politically uncertain times such as these. This is despite the fact that global rough diamond production has fallen from over 177 million carats in 2005 to under 120 million carats in 2022, lab-grown diamonds are now almost indistinguishable from real ones, and mining sites in places like Russia and Canada are largely depleted. This has, however, intensified rather than eased the fierce competition for global resources. Added to this are new scams involving the online sale of so-called diamonds.

🎓 Die Anschläge vom 11. September 2001 veränderten nicht nur das globale Staatengefüge nachhaltig, sie veränderten vorallem die US-amerikanische Demokratie bis in die Gegenwart. Es zeigte sich, dass die amerikanische Verfassung nicht geeignet war, die amerikanische Gesellschaft vor dem Abbau der Bürgerrechte zu schützen, dass die Vereinten Nationen zu schwach waren, die unilaterale amerikanische Aussenpolitik einzudämnmen und sich die amerikanischen Bündnispartner in der NATO, angesichts der Billiardeninvestionen der USA in militärische Aufrüstung, als abhängige und einflusslose Vassallen Washingtons erwiesen. Diese in einer Demokratie bislang einzigartige politische Machtfülle, konzentriert auf den amerikanischen Präsidenten, bestimmt bis in die Gegenwart die amerikanische Politik. George W. Bush, der 43. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten, stellte dazu alle notwendigen Weichen. Peter Kreysler erkundet in seiner Reportage, wie es George W. Bush gelang, aus der amerikanischen Demokratie mit ihren checks und balances ein autoritäres, demokratiefeindliches Staatsgebilde zu formen. Unabhängig davon, ob der Präsident aus den Reihen der Demokraten oder der Republikaner kam.

/🎓 The attacks of 11 September 2001 not only brought about lasting changes to the global political landscape; above all, they have transformed US democracy to this day. It became apparent that the US Constitution was not equipped to protect American society from the erosion of civil rights, that the United Nations was too weak to curb unilateral US foreign policy, and that, in the face of the US’s quadrillion-dollar investments in military rearmament, America’s NATO allies proved to be dependent and powerless vassals of Washington. This concentration of political power – unprecedented in a democracy to date – centred on the American President continues to shape American politics to this day. George W. 🎓 Alaa al Aswany (geb. 1957) im Gespräch mit Christoph Burgmer. Der gelernte Zahnarzt und weltweit übersetzte ägyptische Schriftsteller Alaa al Aswany ist einer der Mitbegründer von "al Kifahi", einer Protestbewegung die 2011 zum Sturz des ägyptischen Diktators Hosny Mubarak maßgeblich beitrug. Die gescheiterte ägyptische Demokratiebewegung mündete in eine Militärdikdatur ägyptischer Offiziere. 2019 wurde Alla al Aswany wegen "Beleidigung des Staates" angeklagt und floh aus Ägypten. Er lebt und arbeitet seither in Paris und New York.

Alaa al Aswany, a qualified dentist and Egyptian writer whose works have been translated worldwide, is one of the co-founders of ‘al Kifahi’, a protest movement that played a key role in the overthrow of the Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2011. The failed Egyptian democracy movement led to a military dictatorship led by Egyptian officers. In 2019, Alaa al Aswany was charged with “insulting the state” and fled Egypt. He has since been living and working in Paris and New York.

علاء الأسواني (مواليد 1957) في حوار مع كريستوف بورغمير. يعد علاء الأسواني، طبيب الأسنان المتخصص والكاتب المصري الذي تُرجمت أعماله إلى لغات عديدة حول العالم، أحد مؤسسي حركة «الكفاحي»، وهي حركة احتجاجية ساهمت بشكل حاسم في الإطاحة بالديكتاتور المصري حسني مبارك عام 2011. أدت الحركة الديمقراطية المصرية الفاشلة إلى قيام دكتاتورية عسكرية بقيادة ضباط مصريين. في عام 2019، وُجهت إلى علاء الأسواني تهمة «إهانة الدولة»، فهرب من مصر. ومنذ ذلك الحين، يعيش ويعمل في باريس ونيويورك.

🎓 Christoph Luxenberg im Gespräch mit Christoph Burgmer. Christoph Luxenberg ist das Pseudonym eines Koranforschers. Unter diesem Pseudonym erschien im Jahr 2000 eine Abhandlung in deutscher Sprache mit dem Titel " Die syro-aramäische lesart des Koran  Koran - Ein  Ein Beitrag zur Entschlüsselung der Koransprache." Christoph Luxenbergs Arbeit basiert auf der Annahme, dass bei Abschriften des Koran in dessen Frühzeit, Auslassungen, Ergänzungen, Umdeutungen, willkürliche oder intendierte Veränderungen gemacht wurden. Erst dadurch seien so viele Stellen im Koran unverständlich geworden. In diesem Interview erläutert Christoph Luxenberg die koranischen Wörter "Mekka" und "Quraish".

/🎓 Christoph Luxenberg in conversation with Christoph Burgmer. Christoph Luxenberg is the pseudonym of a scholar of the Qur’an. Under this pseudonym, a treatise in German was published in 2000 entitled “The Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Qur’an – A Contribution to the Decipherment of the Language of the Qur’an”. Christoph Luxenberg’s work is based on the assumption that, in early copies of the Qur’an, omissions, additions, reinterpretations, and arbitrary or deliberate alterations were made. It is only as a result of this, he argues, that so many passages in the Qur’an have become incomprehensible. In this interview, Christoph Luxenberg explains the Qur’anic terms “Mecca” and “Quraish”.

🎓 Birgit Mahnkopf im Gespräch mit Christoph Burgmer. Birgit Mahnkopf arbeitete an der Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht in Berlin. Sie ist Mitglied im Wissenschaftlichen Beirat von attac Deutschland und im Kuratorium des Institus für Solidarische Moderne. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind die ökonomischen, politischen und sozialen Dimensionen der Globalisierung sowie europäische und internationale Politik. In diesem ersten Teil erörtert sie zunächst die Veränderungen der Arbeitswelt in der Globalisierung seit den 70er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ein zweiter Schwerpunkt sind die Folgen der Lieferkettenveränderungen für die Entwicklungsländer.

In this first part, she begins by discussing the changes in the world of work brought about by globalisation since the 1970s. A second focus is on the consequences of changes in supply chains for developing countries.
